Halloween Brimstone Bread

A delightful loaf of bread infused with spooky flavors, perfect for Halloween gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried herbs (like thyme or oregano)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Give it a gentle stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it’s frothy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and salt. Once your yeast mixture is nice and frothy, pour it into the bowl along with the olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape the bread: Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air bubbles and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Prepare the toppings: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top of the dough with olive oil and sprinkle cornmeal, garlic powder, and herbs over it.
  7. Second rise: Let the dough rest for another 20-30 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Bake the bread: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Cool and serve: Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Slice warm and serve with butter or festive spreads. Pairs well with hearty soups.
