Savory French Toast

A flavorful twist on traditional French toast, featuring a savory custard made with eggs, milk, cheese, and fresh herbs, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 thick slices of bread (Brioche, Challah, Sourdough, or white sandwich bread)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • ½ cup grated cheese (Parmesan, Gruyère, or sharp Cheddar)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (chives, parsley, or thyme)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • pinch of paprika (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs until smooth. Pour in milk and mix well. Add cheese, herbs, and seasonings.
  2. Soak the bread: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Dip each slice of bread into the custard, ensuring it absorbs but doesn’t become soggy.
  3. Cook the bread: Melt butter in the skillet and add soaked bread slices. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Transfer cooked toasts to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Optionally, sprinkle more cheese on top while they cook.
  5. Serve: Enjoy warm, ideally with a fresh salad and a drizzle of vinaigrette.

Notes

For a lighter option, use whole milk instead of cream. Experiment with different cheese and herb combinations for variety.
