Crème Brûlée French Toast

A decadent brunch dish that transforms the classic dessert into a rich and indulgent treat with a caramelized sugar topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • Brown sugar (for topping)
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Fresh berries (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep the bread by slicing it into thick pieces, about 1-1.5 inches each.
  2. Make the custard by whisking together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  3. Soak the bread in the custard mixture, making sure both sides are coated.
  4. Prepare for baking by preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C) and buttering a baking dish.
  5. Bake the soaked bread slices for about 30-35 minutes until the edges are golden and the center is just set.
  6. Caramelize the topping by sprinkling brown sugar on top and using a kitchen torch to create a golden crust.
  7. Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and fresh berries on the side.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half or whole milk for the heavy cream. If making ahead, store in the fridge overnight and add the brown sugar topping just before serving.
