Fried Apple Pies

Deliciously nostalgic fried apple pies with a crisp crust and sweet spiced filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium apples (peeled and diced, about 2 ½ cups)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 package (8-count refrigerated biscuits) or 2 refrigerated pie crusts (cut into circles)
  • Vegetable oil (about 2–3 cups, depending on pot size)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Caramel sauce (optional)
  • Cinnamon sugar mixture (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel and dice your apples. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and toss in the diced apples.
  2. Sweeten the Deal: Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir and let cook for about 5-7 minutes until tender.
  3. Thicken It Up: Dissolve the cornstarch in the water. Once the apples are soft, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for another minute until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let cool.
  4. Roll and Cut the Dough: Flatten each biscuit or roll out the pie crusts into circles about 4-5 inches wide.
  5. Fill and Seal: Spoon Apple Filling onto half of the dough circle, moisten edges, fold over, and seal tightly.
  6. Heat the Oil: In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Test with a small piece of dough.
  7. Fry to Perfection: Fry pies for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Dust and Serve: Dust with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar, and drizzle with caramel if desired.

Notes

These fried pies can also be baked at 375°F for a lighter version. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
