Traditional Brown Irish Soda Bread

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl: whole wheat flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Create a well in the center of the mixture.
  4. Pour in the buttermilk gradually.
  5. Shape the dough by turning it onto a floured surface and kneading gently.
  6. Form the dough into a round loaf, about 1 ½ inches thick.
  7. Score the top of the loaf with a shallow “X”.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
